    Parking fees are collected whenever a gatekeeper is on duty (year round) at the following parks:  Lemon Lake, Stoney Run, Oak Ridge Prairie, Lake Etta, Three Rivers, and Whihala Beach.

    2008 SHELTER RESERVATIONS

    Picnic shelters may be reserved at Buckley Homestead, Lemon Lake, Stoney Run, Deep River, Three Rivers, Lake Etta, Oak Ridge Prairie, and Grand Kankakee Marsh County Parks.  Shelter fees vary depending on the size and amenities of the facility.  Friday, weekend, and holiday prices range from $80 to $500 for Lake County residents and are higher for non-residents.  Monday-Thursday prices are at a reduced price.  Security deposits are required for groups over 500.  Call 219-945-0543 or 219-755-3685 M-F from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. to make reservations or for more information.  All fees are subject to change without notice.  Click here for park rules and regulations

    2008 DEEP RIVER WEDDING GAZEBO

    The Deep River Gazebo is the perfect setting for your wedding.  Located east of the picturesque Historic Wood's Grist Mill, the gazebo adds to the romance of that special day.  Make your reservation by calling the corporate office at the numbers listed below.  The fee is $250, which includes chair usage (rates are subject to change without notice).


     

    2008 FISHING FEES

    Oak Ridge Prairie, Lake Etta, and Three Rivers County Parks offer put-and-take fishing ponds.  Fishing is open April through October from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. daily.  NO LICENSE is required at these three park sites.  Fees are charge.  Stocking dates vary based on weather conditions and availability of fish.  

    Trout is stocked at Oak Ridge Prairie in the spring following ice out on the lake.  Call 219-769-PARK to find out specific dates.  Trout fees are higher based on the availability of fish.  All fess are subject to change without notice.

  • All fishermen must have a photo I.D.  
  • Daily catch limit is 10 fish per person.  Two pole limit per person.  
  • Children must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Catch and release on all large mouth bass, strictly enforced.
  • Jon boats and trolling motors available for rent at Three Rivers.  Only Lake County Parks boats and equipment may be used on the lake.
  • No fishing license is required at Oak Ridge Prairie, Lake Etta or Three Rivers.  
  • A state fishing license IS required at the Grand Kankakee Marsh and Whihala Beach
  • Currently there is no stocking and no fees charged at Lemon Lake and Stoney Run (they are great places to teach you child how to fish)
  • Catch and release on Largemouth bass is strictly enforces.

Lake County Parks Fishing Sites and Information

Oak Ridge Prairie – Stocked species: Rainbow Trout (in March after ice out), Channel Cat. Other species found: Largemouth Bass, Carp, Bullhead, Bluegill. Catch and release Largemouth Bass is strictly enforced.

Three Rivers – The deep lake supports a natural fish supply even though fish are stocked periodically.  Species found: Rainbow Trout, Walleye, Crappie, Bullhead, Perch, Northern, White and Largemouth Bass, Bluegill, Carp, Sunfish. Catch and release Largemouth Bass is strictly enforced.

Grand Kankakee Marsh – The series of dikes, channels, and the pond provide shelter for the many species of fish that inhabit the Kankakee River and, at times of higher water. The park also provides access to fishing on the Kankakee River, which contains Walleye, Northern Pike, Smallmouth Bass, Largemouth Bass, Crappie and Bluegill. An Indiana fishing license is required at this site.

Whihala Beach – Access to Lake Michigan is available from the fishing pier at the west end of the park. Enter from the west past the Hammond Marina. An Indiana fishing license is required at this site.

Lemon Lake – Species found: Largemouth Bass, Bullhead, Carp, Northern Pike. No license required. Currently, no fees charged. Catch and release Largemouth Bass is strictly enforced.

Stoney Run – Species found: Largemouth Bass. No license required. Currently, no fees charged. Catch and release Largemouth Bass is strictly enforced.


2008 Boat Launch Fees at Whihala Beach

Please note that the Lake levels are a record low.  The Lake County Parks and Recreation Department has removed sand from the launch area many, many times in the past.  However, this has not created a permanent solution.  Call prior to coming to the park to see if the launch is open.  219-659-4015.  We apologize for any inconvenience, however these natural circumstances are beyond our control.

GKM Waterfowl Hunting Regulations

  1. Draw for blinds will be at 4:30 a.m. at the check in cabin each day of the posted season.

  2. You must have a party of 3 or 4 licensed hunters to draw

  3. The fee is $7 per person per day.

  4. No one will enter the marsh before 6 a.m. each day.  Shooting time is 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

  5. Hunters are required to sign a liability release (once per season) prior to entering the marsh.

  6. Hunters will leave their hunting licenses at the check in cabin.

  7. Non-toxic shot is required.

  8. A shell limit of 15 shells per day is in effect.

  9. Allow up to 4 people per blind.

  10. Refill vacated blinds on a first come, first served basis, until noon

  11. Hunters may shoot from blinds or designated spaces only.

  12. Areas designated as "Refuge" are non-violate.  Trespassing by either hunters or dogs is strictly not allowed.

  13. Hunters must check in all game harvested.

  14. No alcoholic beverages are permitted in any hunting areas or in at the check in cabin.

  15. Violation of any GKM hunting regulations may result in the loss of hunting privileges at the GKM for the season.  Beyond the GKM regulations, hunters must understand and comply with those set by the Indiana DNR and the USFWS.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources requires all hunters born after 1986 to take this class. All hunters, regardless of age, need this class if they wish to hunt out of state or participate in state-sponsored hunts. Adults are encouraged to take the class with their young hunters to be able to reinforce what is taught. Participants will learn about firearms safety, survival, first-aid, wildlife identification and management, hunter responsibility and ethics. It is required that participants take all 10 hours of the class and pass a written exam. Those who pass the exam will receive a certified hunter’s education card that is good for life. Children 12 and younger are required to have an adult present throughout the class.

Beer Permits -- $100 plus bonding or insurance. Payment required prior to event and issuance of permit. All state requirements must be adhered to. Permission of Park Board required.  Bonding or insurance must also be provided.

Camping at Stoney Run -- $30 plus tax (Primitive facilities).  Only available for groups. Advance reservations required.

Cross County Ski Rentals -- $5 for two hours. Oak Ridge Prairie and Stoney Run open December-February. Lemon Lake open December-March, snow and weather conditions permitting. Weekdays 10 a.m. with last rental at 4 p.m.  Weekends 9 a.m. with last rental at 4 p.m. All equipment returned by 5 p.m.  Note: park closing times may vary due to extreme darkness.

Dogs permitted in the parks -- Dogs must be on a leash at all times except in Dogwood Run, the off leash facility at Lemon Lake, or for special activities with prior approval. Dogs are not permitted at Gibson Woods, on the beaches at Whihala or Lake Etta, or at any of the special events held in the Lake County Parks.

Dogwood Run at Lemon Lake -- Annual fee: $60 Lake County resident; $80 out-of-county; $50 Lake County senior (over 60); $65 out-of-county senior (over 60).  All rates include parking pass. Turkey Creek Golf Course, 6400 Harrison St. in Merrillville opens for the season in April (weather permitting).  This course include 18 challenging holes, several water hazards, sand traps, a clubhouse, pro shop, and banquet facilities that seat up to 250 people

2008 NON-RESERVED HAYRIDES

(for individuals and families)

Buckley Homestead - Enjoy the quiet, steady pace of the horses as they pull the hay wagon around the back 80 acre trail. Look for pheasant, deer, and coyote as you travel through the wooded areas and open fields. Individuals and families may ride on a first-come, first-serve basis on Saturdays and Sundays in September 21 through and October 26 (except during the Fall Festival on October 4 & 5) at 1 and 2 p.m. for only $3 per person.  Remember: Groups may reserve evening hayrides by calling the business office at 219-945-0543.

Deep River - Take a ride over the river and through the woods along the trails of Deep River. Individuals and families may ride on a first-come, first-serve basis on Saturdays and Sundays October 4-26  at 1:30 and 2:30 for only $3 per person. Groups may reserve evening hayrides by calling the business office at 219-945-0543.

BEACHES

The beaches at Lake Etta and Whihala Beach are open from Memorial Day through Labor Day (excluding weekdays the last two weeks of August).  Times are 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. on weekends and 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. on weekdays when weather conditions permit.  Parking fees are charged at both parks.  There is a $2 per person fee for the Lake Etta water slides.

2008 WHIHALA BEACH Launch Fees

Daily launch fees are $15 for Lake County residents and $25 for non-residents.

Season launch fees are $85 for Lake County residents and $155 for non-residents.  

The boat ramp is open from 4:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. when weather conditions permit.


Equipment Rentals
Paddleboats are available at Lake Etta and Lemon Lake.  They may be rented for $5 plus tax per 1/2 hour.
Athletic equipment is available at Lemon Lake, Oak Ridge Prairie, Lake Etta, Whihala Beach, Stoney Run, and Deep River and may be rented for $5 plus tax per equipment set, per day.
Cross country ski rentals are available at Lemon Lake from Dec. 1 until March 31 and also at Oak Ridge Prairie and Stoney Run from Dec. 1 through February (weather permitting).  $5 for two hours. Oak Ridge Prairie and Stoney Run open December-February. Lemon Lake open December-March, snow and weather conditions permitting. CAMPING

CAMPING IS OFFERED AT STONEY RUN COUNTY PARK FOR GROUPS ONLY.  Primitive facilities.  No hook-ups. The fee is $30 plus tax.  Firewood is $10 plus tax.

Where can you go take a hike or just enjoy a quiet stroll? 

There are twelve parks in the Lake County Parks and Recreation Department and two hike/bike trails scattered from Lake Michigan to the Kankakee River .  All totaled, there are more than 100 miles of trails in the County Parks system.  We invite you to go to a park near you and step toward better health.  The following is a description of the trails located at each of our parks. GATE FEES APPLY WHEN GATEKEEPER IS ON DUTY.

  • Lake Etta:  About 1 mile of wooded and waterfront trails, flat terrain.

  • Three RiversOne & 1/4 mile asphalt trail around the lake, flat terrain, somewhat wooded (note: the trail is open around the lake, but limited access next to the construction area for the coming Three Rivers Discovery Play Center)

  • Deep River:  About 8 miles of wooded, hilly trails along the river south of Wood’s Historic Grist Mill

  • Oak Ridge Prairie:  About 5 miles of trails in flat terrain through woods and prairie.

  • Stoney RunAbout 8 miles of trails, flat and hilly, mostly wooded terrain.

  • Lemon Lake:  One mile paved trail around lake and woods - some hills.  More than 5 miles of primitive trails in hilly wooded terrain.

  • Buckley Homestead:  One mile bark chip trail around park, some hills and woods.  Additional trail around back 80 acres, hilly with some woods.

  • Grand Kankakee Marsh:  More than 30 miles of flat trails on levees that dissect and connect the Grand Kankakee Marsh.  Woods, river and wetland abound in this birding haven.

  • Turkey Creek Golf Course:  Golf with a pull cart and walk the course (during off peak times)

  • Erie Lackawanna Trail:  About 1.6 miles of this 12-mile asphalt trail are maintained by the Lake County Parks.

  • Oak Savannah TrailEight miles of wooded asphalt trail from Griffith to Porter County .

  • Cedar Creek Golf Course:  Golf with a pull cart and walk the course for enjoyable exercise.
