Lake County Parks & the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Committee invite the public and Gold Star Family Members to join us in honoring our nation’s fallen heroes this Memorial Day. The 41st Annual Memorial Day Service will be held at 2:30 PM on May 30th at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Stoney Run County Park (9320 E. 142nd Ave. Hebron, IN).
The 2022 Memorial Day service will feature several speakers including Congressman Frank Mrvan, Lieutenant Colonel Jennifer Ruth Green, Gold Star Family Member and Indiana’s Fallen Heroes volunteer Vicki Vicari, and Pat Bessigano, the Indiana State Council President of Vietnam Veterans of America among others. Musical interludes provided by the Hanover Thespian Society, a cannon volley from the Fourth Battery, and the Indiana Fallen Heroes project help create a unique and dynamic service. Visitors of all ages are invited to join. Bleacher seating is available, or visitors are invited to bring chairs or picnic blankets to set up on the lawn. The event is free.
We would like to extend a special invitation in 2022 to Gold Star Family Members. Following the Memorial Service any Gold Star Family members will be acknowledged and presented with a token of recognition. Additionally, the newest addition to the memorial site—a monument honoring Gold Star Families—will be officially unveiled. Service members rarely serve alone. They are supported by thousands of children, spouses, and other loved ones. As a nation we mourn the loss of a service member in a time of conflict and hold space for families who must go on without their fallen hero. The term Gold Star Families (or Gold Star Mothers) has been around for the last century. Their loss and unique sacrifice will now be honored near the memorials for the heroes they love and miss.
For over 40 years the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Committee has helped create the memorial and services held at Stoney Run. Their organization and dedication resulted in a beautiful space that honors America’s heroes and brings new people an opportunity to pause and remember each year. Following this service, the committee will begin a much-deserved retirement and pass the torch fully to the Lake County Parks & Recreation Department. We appreciate the leadership they have shown over the last several decades and move forward to continue their work of honoring veterans in Lake County. If you have ever attended a service previously or walked the memorial at Stoney Run, please consider stopping by this Memorial Day to thank the committee men and women who have helped to make all this possible.
