Honoring Our Grinder Legends
For more than three decades, the Deep River Grinders have brought the sights, sounds, and sportsmanship of 19th-century baseball to life at Deep River County Park. The team plays by authentic 1858 rules, trading modern gloves and equipment for wooden bats, hand-stitched balls, and a spirit of gentlemanly conduct. What started as a small group of history buffs and ballplayers has grown into one of the region’s most beloved living-history traditions, drawing thousands of spectators each season to cheer from the shade of Grinder Field.
Celebrating Dedication and Tradition
At the most recent home game, the Grinders honored two long-time volunteers as official Grinder Legends, Dave Stutler and Brian Doolin. Between them, these two men have given more than 60 years to the program, helping keep the game and its values alive for generations.
Dave has been playing for 30 years, serving as a steady presence both on the field and behind the scenes. When he’s not on the hurlers mound, Dave is showing up for his fellow teammates and holding the program to the highest of standards.
Brian has been with the team nearly since its founding, joining in 1993 lending his enthusiasm, humor, and deep knowledge of the game to countless matches. For years Brian welcomed cranks (the local term for Grinder fans) and visiting teams with impressive soliloquies to start the game.
The two join the two original (albeit self-declared) Grinder Legends, Jim Basala and Rob Szrom, who were there to honor their teammates. All of these Grinder Legends embody the best of what the Deep River Grinders stand for: camaraderie, respect, and a love for the timeless game of baseball.

Each summer, visitors of all ages gather at Grinder Field to experience baseball as it was meant to be played with heart, humility, and a sense of fun. The Deep River Grinders invite you to join them in May of 2026 for another season of vintage baseball at Deep River County Park.
