Get your hands dirty! The American Psychological Association has found that gardening and exposure to nature has profound mental health benefits. Lake County Parks is happy to foster that communion with nature through a variety of plant and gardening programs and activities.

Do you have a green thumb, and some spare time? Consider volunteering to help plant and maintain our flower beds and green spaces. Your handiwork will be appreciated by all who visit the park throughout the year.

Gardening events

Throughout the year Lake County Parks hosts a variety of gardening and horticulture events. These events include: 

  • Perennial Plant Swaps at Deep River County Park -Just separate and pot some of your perennials and bring them to the swap, and leave with something new! Arrive early, plants go fast!
    • Spring Perennial Plant Swap- Saturday, April 16, 2022 at 10 AM (meet in back of parking lot near head trail)
    • Fall Perennial Plant Swap takes place mid-September. Exact date to be posted. 
  • Native Plant Sales hosted by Gibson Woods Wild Ones. Dates typically in May.
  • Wild Ones: Native Plants & Gardens meetings at Gibson Woods Nature Preserve
