Birding

Birding

Many species of birds can be seen right here in Northwest Indiana. The birds either call this area their home or are just passing through. The Lake County Parks offers a variety of programs through out the year giving you a chance to see and learn about these feathered friends. Check out our Birding calendar to see what events are going on at any of the Lake County Parks!

Christmas Bird Count

The Christmas Bird County (CBC) is a long-standing program of the National Audubon Society, with over 100 years of community science involvement. It is an early winter bird census, where thousands of volunteers across the U.S., Canada, and many countries in the Western Hemisphere go out over a 24-hour period on one calendar day around Christmas to count birds. You can participate in one of two CBC circles in Lake County. Contact the Sand Ridge Audubon Society for the circle that includes Gibson Woods and part of north Lake County (date is late December); for southern Lake County (county date is Saturday, January 2, 2021), please contact Loyce Fandrei at lafan2018@rocketmail.com. More information can also be found online at www.audubon.org/conservation/join-christmas-bird-count
